In 1998 Armidale Branch NPA with other local groups, individuals and Thunghutti support, proposed linking New England National Park with Oxley Wild Rivers National Park. In 1999 Cunnawarra National Park was created.
Regrettably some of the areas of Styx River State Forest recommended for protection by the Community Reserve Proposal were not included in the new park.
These are areas deeply significant to tablelands and coastal First Nations people with cultural sites and environmental values including rainforest, old growth and the habitats of endangered species, as well as being vital for the health of the Macleay River catchment. The last twenty five years are witness to these precious areas severely impacted by unsustainable logging.
Now is the time to ensure protection by phasing out native forest logging.
