Film: #RegeneratingAustralia — Belgrave Cinema, Q&A with the filmmaker

Regenerating Australia is a 17-minute short film based on a four-month interview process with a diverse group of Australians who shared their hopes and dreams for the country’s future. It is a new story for our nation: a story of empowerment. A story of solutions. A story of regeneration.

Our experiences leading the highly successful impact campaigns for our previous films 2040 and That Sugar Film have shown us that, once inspired and then given tangible pathways, people are ready and willing to take meaningful action. We have seen over one million school students being taught the 2040 curriculum materials and millions of dollars raised for climate solutions after audiences took direct action after seeing the film.

Regenerating Australia will adopt a similar approach and the campaign will be integrated into a broader ‘Regenerators’ movement that amplifies stories of regeneration and enables audiences to find inspiration and agency to start regenerating.

Anna Kaplan — Producer

In mid-2020, we spent four months connecting with Australians in person and over zoom to ask a simple question: what changes would you like to see implement in Australia by 2030?

The Australians we listened to were from a range of ages, ethnicities, socio-economic backgrounds and political persuasions. Universally, participants felt that we are living in a period that is deeply transformative, but whether that is in a positive or negative way is yet to be seen. The desire for a future that puts community needs and decision making at its heart was clear. Many participants shared a desire to be involved in doing more to make the future a brighter, healthier, safer and fairer place.

The top 5 solutions we heard throughout the listening campaign included:

  1. Valuing, amplifying and adhering to First Nations knowledge
  2. Decentralised decision-making with more community involvement
  3. Regional investment that creates local jobs and economic activity
  4. Community-led clean energy projects and localised food systems
  5. Regenerative farming and land management practices.

Regenerating Australia is a hypothetical news report from 2030 based on interviews with a diverse group of Australians who were asked about their hopes and dreams for the future.
