I’m writing to introduce myself and the community group we’re currently setting up. Thread Shed Armidale is a not-for profit group designed to build community through skills sharing while helping to reduce textiles from entering waste streams. We offer low cost workshops teaching mending, sewing and clothes upcycling skills, as well as areas where people can sit and stitch socially and sewing machines which can be used for a small fee. We hope to be a welcoming place where people can gather, make new friends, learn new skills and share their own expertise too.
Armidale Uniting Church has very kindly donated space and support for Thread Shed — no strings attached! We plan to be operational by the end of April, and are currently applying for grants to help fund mending events and clothes swaps to raise awareness both of our group and of how we can all do something toward reducing our impact on the planet.
Please let me know if you have any questions about Thread Shed, and let me know if I can be of assistance.
Rachael

I would love to be involved.
Hi ? I’m very interested in all this! I’m from Estonia and we had clothes swaps in our church there every quarter. I’m also fairly new at sewing but can do basic sewing. I also knit and crochet and shop at op shops as much as possible. All this to say, I love this idea and can’t wait to join you.
I’m a stay at home mum and homemaker and have plenty of free time here and there. So I can help if you need any ? Also welcome to find me on Facebook or Instagram too.
Love this idea. What day/s are you planning to have this open?
I’d love to join a sewing group. Want to learn bag making out of recycled fabrics. Would like to know what days you’re available and if I bring my own sewing machine that my Beloved Mother left me.
Hi everyone,
Thread Shed is opening on 23 April at 114 Rusden St Armidale. We’ll be open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week, 10am to 3pm. We’re still organising details of events and workshops, and we’ll be posting these on Instagram @threadshedarmidale, and on FB Thread Shed Armidale NSW. We’re currently working on a website for those not on social media, but we’re all volunteers so it will take some time.
If you would like to contact us in the meantime, our email is threadshedarmidale@gmail.com. We are looking for volunteers as we want to keep costs low so that all our programs are as accessible as possible. We’ll be having a meeting for anyone interested in volunteering on 11 April 2026 at 10am at Wesley Hall 114 Rusden St (not the big church, the little hall on the east side of it). Come along if you can, and we’ll let you know what opportunities are available, for as little or as much time as you have available.
Looking forward to being part of this great project:)
A great idea! I’m a struggling sewer & would love to learn more.
This is terrific! My daughter and I would love to attend workshops and classes! I have very basic sewing knowledge and my daughter is a teenager who is very keen to learn this craft.
Hello, very happy that you are setting this up! I have some materials that I would be happy to donate for projects if you need.
Am very interested in this! Keen to learn some new skills and meet people! Approximately how much will it cost? Cheers!
This looks awesome! ?
Looking forward to supporting this project. Will you be sending emails as well as social media?
