Australia wide climate risk assessment

A new non-partisan network of current and former defence and security practitioners has launched: the Australian Security Leaders Climate Group (ASLCG), warning Australia is ‘ill-prepared’ for the threats that accelerating climate change poses to Australia’s security.

“The 2020 National Climate Emergency Summit helped to crystallise the need to form a specialist task force to develop a whole-of-nation climate risk assessment. This comprehensive assessment should address how our nation can adequately respond to the scale and speed of climate risks and threats in the pursuit of global and human security.”
— Ian Dunlop, Australian Security Leaders Climate Group

ASLCG is calling for a Whole-of-Nation Climate and Security Risk Assessment, which, according to the group, is required for Australia to fully comprehend the scale, risk and impacts of climate change on Australia and our region, including on social cohesion, energy security and import and export markets. ASLCG believes the assessment should also outline a framework for how our nation can adequately respond to these threats.

ASLCG aims to make climate an immediate security priority in Australia. ASLCG will work to raise public awareness on the security threat of climate change, undertake strategic research, develop policy recommendations and work with government and department officials to secure action on climate-security threats.

  • Too late & too little. You either change society & stop burning fossil fuels completely & immediately, or our children are going to die from climate change. Simple as that.
