Knitting Nannas Against Gas

If anyone in our area would like to start a “loop” of KNAG here (or a similarly humorous group) get in touch with the editor.

Last year a few of us heard about the activities of a group of CSG activists in Lismore who had formed the Knitting Nannas Against Gas (KNAG).  These women were demonstrating against CSG activities in the Lismore/Casino Area.  They would take along their chairs and sit and knit – mostly in yellow and black.  They have for some time been having regular knit-ins every Thursday afternoon outside the office of Thomas George, the Nationals State Member for Lismore.  They also attend markets.

After consulting with the northern Nannas  about protocols, we decided to form our own Grafton Loop of the Knitting Nannas Against Gas.  We had knit–ins at Glenugie during the Metgasco drilling and we have had a number of knit-ins  outside the office of our local member, Chris Gulaptis.  We have also written to Gulaptis, had one formal meeting with him and another discussion outside his office when we were engaged in a knit-in there.  Ours is a small and fairly loose group.  We have been fairly quiet since Metgasco quit the area but a few of us  joined the Lismore Nannas’ knit-in about 6 weeks ago and we have  had a Nannas afternoon tea at a member’s place.

We have found it a very effective way of getting the anti-CSG message across.  We can incorporate humour in our protests. The Lismore Nannas do this very effectively indeed.

The Knitting Nannas Against Gas in Lismore have a Facebook Page.

The Grafton Loop of the Knitting Nannas Against Gas has a blogMake sure you read the Lismore Nanna’ Nannafesto which is posted on our blog.  (It’s in the section “About Knitting Nannas”)
