Proposed communications tower on North Hill

Hi, today is the closing date for submissions to the council on the proposed communications tower at North Hill. This is the letter I’ve sent.

Armidale Dumaresq Council

Dear Madam/Sir,
I write to express my concerns about the proposed communications tower on North Hill.

The proposal raises many concerns. The first is the reduction in public parkland it would cause. We have very little in the way of native bush parks in the urban area, particularly ones with good views. This is an important public asset that should not be sold off to and locked up by private interests. It should remain open to the people and in public hands for perpetuity. I am also concerned that this tower may cause the immediate area to be a health hazard, through increases in electro-magnetic radiation and microwaves. This is inappropriate for a public park.

The proposal will no doubt also require clearing of vegetation, further impacting on the area’s environmental decline. Associated with the development of much of this area, it will add to the decline in biodiversity, and further add to global warming, through the release of carbon dioxide from the cleared vegetation, and the removal of a carbon sink.

The proposal will also have aesthetic impacts. Not only will it make the park itself less attractive, but it will affect the skyline and aesthetic landscape of the entire town.

I am amazed that in 2012 I should even have to write such a letter. This proposal should never have been seriously considered.
