I’m keen to hear from anyone with experience or interest in exploring “sustainable community housing”. By this I mean a group of people pooling resources to buy or rent houses on the same block of land or subdivision, have a community garden, shared equipment (car, lawn mower, mulcher), sharing meals, activities (e.g. child-minding, companionship, walking the dog …) …
I understand that these sorts of cooperative ventures are quite common in other parts of the world (after all, what I’m basically describing here is an old-fashioned village!), and I’m told that a few models have been attempted in Australia. Also that Homes North might be interested.
I am prompted to make this enquiry now, as my preschooler is not getting any younger and I would really like him to grow up within a more cooperative community than mainstream housing with its random distribution of individuals is able to offer.
Please contact me (Cathie Lamont) on {local prefix landline}2 8240 or SLA editor if you are interested.
