A Gentle Return to the Earth

Natural burial offers an environmentally conscious and deeply meaningful way to honour both the body and the earth after death. It allows the body to return naturally to the soil, using only biodegradable coffins or shrouds made from natural materials. Burials take place at a shallower depth, supporting the body’s natural return to the earth, while enriching the surrounding ecosystem.

Over time, these spaces become thriving natural landscapes—supporting native plants, wildlife, and biodiversity. They can regenerate the land and create protected natural environments that thrive for generations to come.

People who choose natural burial often value sustainability, simplicity and a connection to nature. It is a final act of giving back to the earth that has sustained us-a legacy that honours the interconnectedness of all life.

A growing number of cemeteries across NSW now offer natural or bushland burial options. In NSW, most natural burial sites are found within hybrid cemeteries-traditional cemeteries that include dedicated bushland or conservation burial sections.

The Natural Burial Project, based in Uralla, is a group of passionate locals working to establish a Natural Burial ground in the New England region.

We are conducting a survey to gauge community interest, concerns and preferences and are seeking rural landowners who may be interested in being part of this meaningful project. Would your property make a great site? We’d love to hear from you!
