As part of the annual Midwinter Ball auction, Sussan Ley donated “Mystery Flight and Lunch with the Leader of the Opposition”. She’ll fly the plane herself, and promised “ripping yarns”, “cold lager”, a classic pub lunch, and shearing lessons.
The Gala is mostly a bit of fun for MPs but I thought the trip presented a really serious chance to impress upon Ley the urgent threat of climate inaction to everyday Australians… and, importantly, to the Coalition. So I placed the bid (in a personal capacity, no C200 funds were used) and won.
But I won’t be riding in Sussan’s Cessna (and not because at the Gala Ley joked I should “bring my parachute”, which was… funny). Instead one of our C200 Future Leaders, Katya Zheluk, has volunteered to join Ley in the cockpit. You might remember Katya from The Project earlier this year. She’s an incredible young climate champion and she’s been advocating for more ambitious action since her home in the Blue Mountains was threatened by the Black Summer bushfires.
She’ll be joined by a prominent Australian climate scientist. We’re also trying to figure out a way to get as many Climate 200 supporters there in spirit as possible. More on both soon.
Ley promised it would be a flight and lunch they’ll never forget. I think she’s right.
