Joanna Macy’s death on 19 July has led to an outpouring of tender grief and immeasurable gratitude for all she has given to the world. Joanna was one of the great wisdom teachers of our time, offering us the fundamental truth that by honouring our pain for the world, we can find in ourselves the clarity and courage to act with others for the healing of our planet. From the 1970’s and through all the decades since, Joanna developed with others an extraordinary range of experiential exercises, bodywork, guided meditations and rituals that have broken the taboos against expressing our agony, grief, anger, fear, despair or just plain numbness in the face of looming global catastrophe. From all these experiences, there are thousands of people who have used their whole new sense of power in extraordinary ways that have rippled out across the globe. You may well have been touched by some of this work without even knowing it.
