Bush plant identification and seed collection walk at GlenBurne

The stunning bushland on ‘Glenburnie’ has rarely been accessible by members of the public, but learning the plants, collecting the seed and growing the seed located on the site will be the focus of an event hosted by the Southern New England New England on Thursday 20th October 2022.

“We are excited to be co-hosting this event with landholder, Dr Ron Hawksford, and ecologist David Carr, of Stringybark Ecological, who will walk with participants through a NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust Agreement area,” said Struan Ferguson, Southern New England Landcare’s Project Manager for Biodiversity projects.

“This is a rare opportunity to see a stunning local plant community up close, learn about the plants that occur there and collect some seed from plants that are ripe for harvest,” she said

“We are very fortunate to have ecologist Dave Carr as our guest expert on the day, so that after collecting seed, participants will learn how to propagate the seed in the afternoon session,” she said.

This event will be the second held within the Southern New England Landcare region to establish landholder networks and enable landholders undertaking private land conservation to develop knowledge and obtain peer support.

“Regional landholders with private land conservation agreements have indicated they want to identify the plant communities and learn about the native plants that occur on their land and this event is designed to meet that need,” said Struan.

Dr Ron Hawksford will speak on his motivations, experiences, and future hopes for managing several private land conservation areas on his property.

“I was overjoyed to learn several new plants that I was not familiar with from Dave Carr during a recent site visit in preparation for the event,” said Ron.

“I’m looking forward to sharing this area with people, particularly as it is flourishing after all the rain we’ve had,” he said.

Bush for Biodiversity – ‘Glenburnie’ will be held from 9.30 am – 2.30 pm on Thursday 20th October 2022. Everyone is welcome to enjoy a day of walking, talking and learning and meeting other private land conservation landholders from around the region.

The event is a part of a series taking place around the region called Partnering in Private Land Conservation, a joint initiative delivered by Landcare NSW and the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT).

The BCT is a statutory not-for-profit body established under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016 which began operating in 2017.
