An unlikely coalition of protesters is standing in the way of a coal company’s efforts to construct a massive open-cut mine in a NSW state forest.
Over recent months, thousands of supporters have flowed in and out of “Camp Wando” to add their voices, and sometimes their fingerprints, to the cause. (“If you are thinking about being arrested at the action,” counsels one protest group’s website, “it is very important you bring some photo ID … to assist with [police] processing …”) There have been more than 220 arrests at Maules Creek since January, mostly during planned “actions” within the Leard forest, where native woodland is being flattened by bulldozers to make way for the Whitehaven mine.
