People’s Battle for Nature inspired an Armidale audience

SONY DSCThe Armidale edition of People’s Battle for Nature Photography Exhibition started with an educating and inspiring opening night (27/6). Held at the ideal location of the Armidale Tree Group Nursery, 50 people attended to see work of 8 photographers to the  recorded soundscape of birds native to the Pilliga and Leard forests.

Convenor of Sustainable Living Armidale and activist Iain Mackay opened the exhibition paying tribute to the recently deceased Tom Jefferson who photographed the largest contribution of work on display. Viewers learnt about the struggle going on near Narrabri to save forests and stop fossil fuel mining through the captured moments of the rugged protectors and the nature they are fighting for.

Over a thousand dollars was raised with the proceeds going to the Leard and Pilliga fighting fund.

It was also a night to celebrate the wins, stopping winter clearing at Leard being the most recent. Iain finished his speech thanking everyone who has taken non-violent direct action and commended others to do likewise.

“It’s the civil disobedience you take when the government is inactive or just benefitting too much from the spoils” Iain said.

People’s Battle for Nature organised by The Wilderness Society is a touring exhibition that has been to Sydney, Armidale, Narrabri with Canberra and Melbourne being the next legs.
