The SLA Energy Group Needs New Members

The SLA Energy Group meets the first MONDAY of each month from 1:00 to 2:00pm at the Southern New England Land Care offices in the East Mall–stairs next to the Colour Copy Centre.  Come along and see if this is a group you would like to join.

We have just completed the  very successful, I Can Do It project to help people reduce their household energy use.  It was supported by a small grant from the NSW Environmental Trust. Click on ‘Light Bulb Moments’ on the left side  of SLA’s home page to see the program, resources and links to two related video.

Speaking with participants in our workshop,s it became clear that many rental properties in Armidale are unsuited to this climate. To stay comfortable, both in winter and summer means using a lot of electricity or gas.  We have already identified  groups, ‘stakeholders’ who would be important in a campaign to improve dwellings, for example by installing insulation. The next step is to decide what strategies to employ to be effective in facilitating change. We’ll discuss this at the next meeting.

As well, the latest IPCC report  will be a focus at our next meeting with discussion about whether to hold a special forum to outline the predictions for Australia. One option is to bring a speaker to Armidale who has worked on the report: for example ANU’s Professor Tony McMichael an expert on the environmental impacts on health or Professor Ove Hoegh-Guldberg, Brisbane-based marine biologist, or UNSW’s Dr. Lisa Alexander, whose work focuses on extreme weather events.

What the Energy Group really needs is additional people with new energy and new ideas, so please join us. If you would like to join the group but can’t come at that time, let us know a good time for you. If a different time suits more people lets change it.

Cheers, Patsy
