March In March Armidale – 15th at 2pm at Central Park

March-in-March-4A diverse group of local community members is planning a rally for March in March Armidale on Saturday, March 15, at 2pm at Central Park.

March in March is a grass-roots movement which seeks to engage Australians across the political spectrum and to give expression to an inclusive and more caring vision of Australia.

“Whether you are concerned over the destruction of farm land and water resources, proposed changes to Medicare, climate change, the treatment of refugees, the potential devastation of our Barrier Reef, attacks against the union movement or the ABC, the weekend of March 14-16 provides an opportunity to express your dissent and send a clear message to our political leaders,” said Liz O’Hara, one of the organisers.

“March 7 will see the launch of ‘Politics in the Club’ at 6pm at the Armidale Club with a discussion of the nation-wide March in March movement and the political climate that is giving rise to such grassroots activism.

“Two of the local organizers, Bea Bleile and Teresa van der Kraan, will be on hand to lead a discussion together with Tony Lynch, senior lecturer in politics and philosophy at UNE.

“The main event, a rally, will be held in Central Park on March 15 from 2 pm. Confirmed speakers include Graham Maddox on social justice, Kathy Nicholson on TAFE, Helen Ware and John Harris on refugees as well as Stuart Murray, a farmer and Narrabri resident concerned about coal seam gas mining.

“We invite members of the community to join us at the Farmers’ Markets on Sunday, March 2 and March 16, to create posters, paintings and statements expressing their views and concerns. Some materials will be provided – bring your own if you can.

A Community Dinner will be held on March 28 from 7.30pm at the Armidale Club.

Organising meetings for March in March are held on Wednesdays at 6 pm, also at the Armidale Club, 91 Beardy Street, all are welcome.
