TAFE Saturday Sustainable Living Workshops CANCELLED

Update 10/10/13 CANCELLED

For the third year, TAFE New England, Armidale campus is running a series of workshops called “The Saturday Sustainable Living Workshops”. Building on the success and experience of previous years, the workshops this year will have a practical focus as well as be grounded in sound theory. Workshop topics for 2013 are:

  • Veggie gardening, composting and worm farming
  • Making personal care products ($20 cost)
  • Fermentation (cost of $10)

The focus this year is definitely hands on, practical experiences. How many times have you left a workshop with every good intention to do things differently only to slip straight back in to old habits? This year, with the opportunity to actually experience making these different products and in most cases, leaving the workshop with examples of each product in your hands as well as the recipes, there will be no excuses!

Veggie gardening, composting and worm farming 14th September

A highly practical, hands on workshop covering a range of topics: seeds and seedlings, making a seed raising mix, hot and cold composting, worm farms, sheet mulching, no dig gardens and whatever else we can fit in on the day. Bring along any gardening insights and/or problems you have to share with the group. Bring along seeds of your choice and some containers to sow them in (old margarine tubs work well). Dress as for gardening and bring a mug for a cuppa and don’t forget to bring your lunch and an outdoor chair if you need one. Be prepared for rain. Only a torrential downpour will halt the day. Beginners especially welcome.

Making Personal Care Products 12th October

Spend a day “indulging” in the making and trialling of: olive oil soap, moisturiser, toner, face wash/shampoo, deodorant and face scrub. Leave with samples of each, a recipe booklet and local purchase guide for ingredients. Cost $20 (to be paid at the front desk at TAFE prior to the workshop). Bring rubber gloves, deodorant spray bottle, small containers for samples, lunch and your receipt of payment.

Fermentation 9th November

Fermentation has been used by humans for centuries to preserve or otherwise enhance food: bread, cheese, yoghurt, beer, wine and sauerkraut are just some examples. In this workshop participants will make a sourdough starter and a loaf of bread (using commercial yeast), sauerkraut, beet kvass and rejuvelac. Other topics covered will include kefir and yoghurt making. You will need to bring along some items like glass jars and a payment of $10 is required. Please pay beforehand at the TAFE front desk (you will not be able to pay on the day) and collect the list of items to bring. Don’t forget to bring your receipt on the day.

Those interested in attending one, some, or all of the workshops are required to enrol at Armidale TAFE prior to attending the workshop. For further information, please contact Vivienne Nano at Armidale Campus TAFE New England on 6773 7769
