Thursday Forum: Insulating Your Wallet, practical home insulation

Thursday, 4 Apr
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

John Bragg & Barbara Finch insulate an old Armidale houseEveryone who wants to limit their home energy bills or use less firewood is invited to the next Sustainable Living Forum on Thursday 4th April at 7pm.

The topic is Practical Home Insulation – how to improve existing homes or building plans.

“On cold winter nights everyone expects to be warmer indoors than outside but precious heat will soon be lost from any house that is drafty or lacks good insulation of ceilings, walls and windows” said Kate Boyd of Sustainable Living Armidale.

“From now to October, nobody wants to lose the free solar heat that comes in through windows, nor waste electricity, gas or wood on extra avoidable heating because heaters use far more energy than most other appliances. The price of electricity and gas keep increasing rapidly, and firewood may have increasing transport costs or reduce wildlife habitats.”

SLA’s Energy Group has organised this Forum to help people figure out what are the most practical things they can do to improve insulation of their existing home to trap energy and save money.

Grant Petersen of TAFE’s New England Institute will be the opening speaker. Grant will explain how correctly installed insulation can reduce movement of heat and radiation, the meaning of ‘R values’, and five safety or health issues to be aware of when choosing insulation methods or deciding what you can do yourself or what to pay for.

Then some local installers and suppliers will talk about materials and options available in Armidale for roof, ceiling, window, door, wall an underfloor insulation, and take questions.

Joakim Ho, a sustainable building designer, will outline some new forms of insulation and methods that can be built into new homes and rooms so little if any heating is needed.

“Most people can do some insulation tasks themselves but will benefit from hearing other people’s experience during the Forum” Kate said. “There are risks to learn about before getting in the ceiling, possibilities for some old walls or windows, simple tricks to make curtains insulate well, and I hope to hear new ideas”.

Samples of insulation and double glazing can be inspected over supper.

The Forum will be in Kent House, 141 Faulkner St. All welcome (gold coin donation appreciated). Inquiries: info@slarmidale.org
