Mt Hyland Mining Petition

Dear Friends,

From those who know of and love our place here at Mt Hyland we are asking for some help.

Just down the road (near the ford towards Dundurrabin, about 2 km from our swimming hole), we have Anchor Resources undertaking exploratory drilling for gold and copper. This is something that would be disastrous for our land and water and of course another threatening process to biodiversity.

Last month some environmental consultants did further surveys here on our land, targeting the Hastings River Mouse and they found 3 of them over 4 nights of trapping. That now makes 28 threatened species of animal, bird, bat, frog, and plants on our place here at Mt Hyland. With the current threats of logging, poisioning for dogs, burning for cattle grazing and clearing all around us, the last thing we need is a gold and copper mine.

We need to be protecting our precious land and all the native species that it is home to, not allowing further threats here. Anchor Resources are only in the exploration stage at the moment, they call this the Blicks River Project. They are also looking at antimony on the other side of Dorrigo.

After speaking with people who have a lot more experience than I do on this subject they say ‘make a fuss early’ so they know it is going to be trouble for the company to come into our landscape.

Anchor Resources is a 97% Chinese owned company and we are very concerned about what destructive elements they will bring into our precious land. We know from the Environmental Defenders Office who came and spoke to our Dundurrabin Community that the law is on the miners side but this makes no sense for the health of the land for future generations, we need to leave behind a legacy for those that are yet to come.

I know that there is power in the united voices and actions of the people. With your help, we hope to send a strong message that mining in areas of environmental significance is not acceptable.

Below is a petition you could sign if, like me, you feel concerned about the significant increase in mining activity. It would also be appreciated if you could share this information with your networks if you are comfortable with that.

Thank you,

For the Earth,

Rosemary Yates
