Thursday Forum: Youth & Climate Change

Thursday, 1 Mar
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

The next Thursday Forum in the monthly series organised by Sustainable Living Armidale (SLA) will focus on young people’s responses to the challenges of climate change and sustainability.

Speaking at the Forum will be Maddie Gramlick and Emily Thomas-Moore (pictured) who are members of the local New England branch of the Australian Youth Climate Coalition (AYCC). They just attended a “Big Solar Boot Camp” in Port Hacking, organised by the activist group 100% Renewable Energy.

The “Big Solar Boot Camp” brought together about 120 people from across the state, ranging in age from 17 to 80. The focus was on how to develop campaign strategies, engage with existing climate movements, and included workshops on lobbying and leadership.  The main focus was on a campaign to support large scale solar thermal installations, a proven technology which can provide base load power to the grid.

The New England branch of 100% Renewable Energy organised the Armidale Town Hall Forum last year with Tony Windsor, where the capacity crowd overwhelmingly urged the government to support renewable energy.

“The Boot Camp was an epic weekend, and we’re really excited to be able to be able to pass on some of what we learned to an Armidale audience,” said Maddie Gramlick. “We also want to speak about the local AYCC”, she said.

“The AYCC has over 70,000 individual members and represents more than 30 of Australia’s largest youth organisations,” says Emily Thomas-Moore.  “It aims to educate, inspire and mobilise young people across the country. After all it is we young Australians who will face the consequences of decisions made today, and that’s why AYCC is working for short-term political impact and the long-term cultural change needed for a safe climate future,” she said.

The SLA Thursday Forum will be held on March 1st at 7pm at Kent House, (opposite Central Park). Everyone is welcome, light refreshments to follow, gold coin donation appreciated.
