Australian homes still the biggest

ABC Online

A new report by CommSec has found Australia continues to build the biggest homes in the world.

The report says data from the Bureau of Statistics shows the average floor area of new homes, including apartments, is 214 square metres.

That is up 5 per cent over the past decade.

CommSec economist Savanth Sebastian says the US has traditionally vied with Australia for the mantle of the biggest homes, but the average new home size in the US stands around 195 square metres.

“The average home size in the US has been shrinking in the past three years,” he said.

“Ironically since the GFC, new homes in Australia are now about 10 per cent bigger than homes in the US and about 9 per cent bigger than homes in New Zealand.”

Mr Sebastian says strong wage growth and Australia’s abundance of land has helped the country keep the record.

“I think Australians are well versed with the fact of having their own backyard and I guess larger block sizes tended to lead to larger homes,” he said.

“In addition to that we have seen real wage growth in his country which has been quite phenomenal over the past decade.”
