July/August News

5 Aug – SLA Village profile now on Cohousing Australia website.  “SLA Village” is now a member of Cohousing Australlia (Incorporating Intentional Communities), and has a profile on their web page.

Here is the link to the 42 projects listed. Great place for getting ideas!

4 Aug.  SLA Forum/Celebration on “Sharing Resources in a Sustainable Community”.  The monthly SLA forum hosted by SLA Village, was a great success.  More details will be posted on the main SLA website after the next edition of SLAM.

2 Aug.  Open House.  House on North Hill was open for individuals to visit 10am-6pm (details on main SLA website/in SLAM).  Owner reported a larger than expected number of people attending and plans to hold a similar day in the future.

1 Aug.  Intentional Communities Conference  in September.  Cathie (our convenor) has been invited to give a presentation at the Intentional Communities Conference at Bundagen Community in September.  As places are limited, she will be attending on behalf of SLA Village.  Email her your burning questions so that they may be included in the program.  Latest news on the conference program may be found by scrolling down the following page on their website (http://www.bundagen.com.au/ ).

29 July.  Positive Meeting with Council.  Cathie met with Counciller Chris Halligan who gave some helpful suggestions about Council operations.  He has offered to ask for more specific advice if Village prepares a concept paper for him to present.  A timeframe of two weeks has been suggested.

22-27 July. Intentional Innovations Community Workshop.   Three members of SLA Village attended the Intentional Innovations Community Workshops run by “Unison” in Armidale and Tamworth in late July.   We spent the last part of the second day beginning to build an Armidale Intentional Innovations Community.  It was particularly valuable to watch a group of diverse individuals creating “something out of nothing” despite (or because of!) their differences.  We may also have recruited some new village members, so it was certainly worthwhile attending.  For more information about the workshops, download the flyer at .

22 July – Shared Meal.  Village’s first monthly shared meal at Kent House was very successful, and gave nine of us an opportunity to get to know each other better, share ideas and generally have a good time.  We plan to hold more dinners on the last Friday of every month in future, and hope to see you there.
