ACTION GROUP REPORTS

SLEX (Joc)

There was working group meeting on 27th but all the SLA people notified were away. New ADC Event Coordinator Rene Dasey. Joc will find out more. (see General Business).

Village (Cathie)

Has held meeting of 10 people, inc. George Neoyogaplex (Melbourne), and another group went to look at his land at Guyra. But not really interested.

Others are looking at land, including at Invergowrie, and Jo Ho (designer) happy to talk to them. Have also considered Strathlea, and noted a new community garden starting in East Armidale with the beginning of some local relationships. Cathie is open to ideas and advice. Maybe consider holding a forum?

Advised her that groups may spend up to $50, without SLACC approval.

Possibility of holding forum in conjunction with SLEX perhaps.

Awareness (Iain)

Planning workshops on ‘writing a blog’ and ‘mailing lists’.

Noted that our free ad in Express and Extra (Autumn Festival Prize) needs to be booked and designed. Suggest 25 May Extra and 27 May Express. Iain will follow up.

Monthly Mall Stall (Jo and Pats)

Last month Wind Farm was the focus, previous month the Liverpool Plains.

Transport

There is no group at present. Iain has posted a notice to generate interest and find a convenor. Bar agreed to ring round to the Transport group list to canvass support and try and get a convenor. (including contacting the Friends of the Northern Railway).

General Business

  1. What can we do for SLEX? General discussion: How we live in our homes…maybe not have a tent? Costa idea of taking old stuff and making good stuff: sculptures, cold frames , getting creative with junk…tie-in with Costa…tie-in with schools: creative challenge….Jo will contact David Lawrence…use stuff from ADC tip shop? Joc will contact ADC/SLEX and Costa.
  2. Jo noted that ABC Catalyst and ABC RN Science Show both featured Peak Oil – stand by for crunch in 2014/15 or even 2013/12. Should we be lobbying Council for more planning for this soon-to-happen eventuality? Agreed that Pats, Joc, Jo seek an informal meeting with ADC Engineer, David Steller to discuss. Also include Ray who did a lot of preparatory work. Need to add relevant material on to our website.
  3. Jo noted the film The Economics of Happiness which looks interesting. She suggested she will see if Bea wants to include it in her film series, and if not, we see if  we can show it.
  4. Jo would like the SLA poster to include on the Talloires stall at the UNE Open Day this week.
  5. Jo noted that the organization 350.org is aiming for a big splash on 24th September, featuring photographic records of events from around the world of  non-fossil fuel transport. Jo suggests we try for 350 bikes in Armidale phographed at the one time. Pats also noted that the Say Yes campaign runs till August. Iain reported that the carbon level is currently at 392.4. Aargh.
  6. Noted that the Cotton Tour is on this weekend, approx 50 people going.
