Our Mission
The Armidale Local Food Group aims to connect community to ensure skills and resources can be put to work addressing the current challenges:
- environmental degradation, declining soil health, and drought;
- The unsustainability and inequity of the industrial food system and;
- the ongoing impacts of colonisation on the wellbeing of people and country.
We believe our community possess skills and resources to address these challenges in a way that best suits local needs and objectives.
We are inspired and guided by the permaculture principles of “Earth care, People care and Fair share”. Our work will contribute to the mission of SLA as a whole, in line with the organisation’s mission statement.
Above all, we acknowledge that we live, work and grow on unceded Aboriginal land and waters and that the struggle for justice continues. This struggle informs and motivates the work of the Food Group.
To raise awareness around and expand the already-existing local food system acknowledging the multiple challenges noted above; organisation to facilitate opportunities for local food growers to connect and work with their supporters in the community; and activation of the community to draw on the extensive knowledge, both local and external, around just food systems to put skills and resources to use.
- Raise awareness and promote local food growing through community-based workshops, forums and gatherings
- Connect with local growers and involving them in projects
- Share skills and resources related to local food production
- Put the community’s skills and resources to use in the form of working bees, local garden/food projects, lobbying and activism.
