Australian’s have one of the highest environmental footprints per capita in the world. If everyone in the world lived like Australians, we’d need more than four Earths worth of resources and capacity to satisfy the demand.
Yet despite the absurdity in that statement, that’s exactly what’s happening around the world as the two-thirds of less developed countries aspire to having a similar standard of living and lifestyle to what we have.
However there is a valid question to ask about whether there is a limit to how much materialism actually improves the quality of our lives. Some research indicates that income only raises happiness up to a point (about USD75,000), but after that it makes no appreciable difference and can even go down.
