You can expect more bikes in the streets of Armidale between 15th and 22nd September, as NSW Bike Week is celebrated. This annual community event promotes cycling as a healthy, sustainable, economical and fun activity for riders of all types.
Sustainable Living Armidale (SLA) has organised three events, starting with a Ride in the Park, beginning from the Farmers’ Market at 10.30am on Sunday 15th September, suitable for all ages. There will be prizes, and all participants will go into a draw for a brand new bicycle.
A new event this year is the Commute Challenge, where individuals or teams log and tally their bike trips from Monday 16th to Friday 20th. Participants are included in the draw for the bike prize.
“The purpose of this competition is to get people pedalling instead of driving, and to promote bicycling as a sustainable transportation mode in Armidale,” says Emily Angell, from the SLA Transport group.
“Any ride you take from point A to point B for a specific purpose can be counted. For instance, commutes from home to work, to do the shopping, to visit a friend or run an errand, or any other non-recreational ride that may have otherwise been done in a vehicle”.
Points are awarded not just for kilometers, but also number of trips, with bonus points for new riders.
Bike Week Commute Card can be picked up at the SLA Ride In The Park event at the Farmers’ Market, or at Sport UNE, Armidale Dumaresq Council, or the Goldfish Bowl café in Jessie Street. More information is on the SLA website slarmidale.org.
The winner of the bike prize will be drawn at the final SLA event: The Finish Line – a celebration and social afternoon with drinks and nibbles at 3pm on Saturday 21st at the Armidale Club.
