Special meeting of AACSG – All Welcome!

Dear All,

A big year is drawing to a close and the next one is full of opportunities for renewing and expanding our campaign on Coal Seam Gas. There are wider opportunities too, with some members of our group concerned about other mining threats to our region.

So, we’re holding a special meeting of AACSG to explore new opportunities for the CSG campaign and to hear from people threatened with other forms of mining in our area.

As always, our aim is to learn from what has worked elsewhere and to get informed before we act.

So, please join us for a special meeting of AACSG

on Wednesday, 7th November, from 6pm to 8pm,

at the Jacaranda Room at Hughes House behind Kent House in Faulkner Street, opposite Central Park, to

  1. Discuss the exciting new initiative sweeping the Northern Rivers – the Gasfields Free Community initiative – and how it might be applied in rural areas surrounding Armidale.
  2. Hear more about proposed mining on the Dorrigo Plateau and how local people are responding.
  3. Start the process of engaging more townspeople in our important work.

There’s a wave of excitement sweeping the Northern Rivers – it’s a new Gasfields Free Community initiative that is designed to build a systematic defence to protect communities from the threat of invasive gasfields. Road by road, locality by locality, communities are declaring themselves Gasfield Free. Their motto is ‘Lock the Gate, Lock the Road, Protect the Region’.  Carmel has recently spent a lot of time learning about the key elements of a gasfields free strategy, and how it functions as a community mobilisation tool designed to garner more engaged, active people into the campaign, and to have lots of fun along the way. She will show a short video  and discuss the applicability of the strategy in our region.

Matt Ford from Dorrigo will join us and give a presentation on the campaign in Dorrigo. Matt will also share what he knows about mining threats closer to Armidale.

Wider engagement with Armidale residents has long been a topic of discussion in our group. Greg has proposed that we conduct a trial community survey in specified areas to better understand community knowledge on the issue.  We hope to then use this information to plan a detailed community engagement strategy within the town. Greg will discuss his ideas and is looking for support with this project.

We look forward to seeing you at the meeting.

Cheers,

Carmel and Bea
