Citizens group to identify climate change actions

Local actions to address climate change will be identified by a new working group being formed by Council.

Community members are invited to nominate for the Climate Emergency Working Group, which will recommend actions for Council and the community to respond to climate change.

Expressions of interest for the group close on Friday 20 March and Council hopes the group will represent a wide range of ages and backgrounds.

“The working group will be in place until the end of June, as a sub-committee of the Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, to research possible climate change initiatives and identify funding opportunities for those actions,” Armidale Regional Council Mayor Simon Murray said.

“It will recommend short, medium and long-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, as well as steps to adapt to the predicted effects of climate change for our region.”

Council’s February Ordinary Meeting finalised terms of reference for the working group, which will complement other climate change initiatives by Council, including its Project Zero30 partnership with the University of New England.

An initial report from the group is expected to be submitted to Council in April.
