2019
  • Greta Thunberg inspires many young people around the world
July –
  • Dale Curtis started an online ‘Climate Emergency’ Petition to Armidale Regional Council
  • Facebook group started – Climate Action Armidale
  • Member report – “answered a call for help from a young friend to step up on climate action”
  • Member report – “taking personal action to prolong our water supply, reduce water usage”
August –
  • ‘2040’ film screening at Belgrave Cinema
  • New people joining the group
  • Talking to individual Councillors re: the need to declare a climate emergency
September –
  • School strike (also March and May 2109) – approximately 1000 people attend. Added 750 signatures to the petition
  • 236 letters written and sent to political leaders: 77 to Adam Marshall, 81 to the Prime Minister, 28 to Angus Taylor, 27 to Susan Ley…. Only 5 addressed to Barnaby Joyce, our Federal representative.
October –
  • Level 5 water restrictions announced
  • Approximately 2000 signatures to the Climate Emergency petition
  • 23/10/10 – Armidale Council declare a Climate Emergency
  • Call for watering trees in Central Park – drought impact
  • Bushfires gripping our region
November –
Black Gully Music Festival:
  • Wytaliba Fire happens day before, Vivian Chaplain and George Nole die and 60 homes lost
  • Climate action stall, with Sustainable Living Armidale
  • 24 Hours of Reality – community art project at NERAM
  • Emergence of the Armidale Red Rebels

  • Bushfires grip the entire country – Prime Minister is found holidaying in Hawaii
  • People beginning to realise droughts and bushfires are linked to climate change

  • Fundraising concert for Wytaliba bushfire affected community

  • 24th – Vigil for bushfires affected communities – human and non-human – at Regional Australia Bank roundabout
  • School Strike 4 Climate – Armidale team established – woo hoo!
  • Armidale Red Rebels join the rally at Sydney Opera House
  • Member note mentions ‘environmental graffiti’ – tell us more!! Sounds great.
February
  • Tamworth group establishes – Parents for Climate Action
  • Contact from Dubbo – new group there
  • Red Rebels and other members represent Armidale at the People’s Assembly Rally in Canberra for the start of the political year
  • People’s Assembly solidarity roundabout vigil outside the Wicklow
  • Member report – “my neighbour at work moved her $$ from the Commonwealth Bank”
  • Hundreds more native trees and shrubs planted, weeded and mulched at the Creeklands
  • Fundraising concert for WIRES
