The fires are affecting everyone. No relief is expected over the next few days.
We will advise of a new date – in 2020. On November 23rd, Save Our Macleay River (SOMR) will hold an event to promote awareness of concerns and benefits of the Macleay River.
Bring your canoe, equipment, food and water for an informative, enjoyable day on Saturday November 23rd.
Start: Nelsons Wharf Reserve some 9km upstream from Kempsey, launching at 10.00am: Assemble at 9.15am, to register with Welcome to Country, Briefing and Launch by 10.00 am for a two hour (7km) paddle to the rest-stop at the boat-ramp up stream from the railway bridge. Assisted by the tide, paddlers will pass by farmland, steep slopes of Greenhill and River Street areas and enjoy an interesting experience from the water.
After the rest-stop the paddle will progress downstream, passing the island at Riverside Park to disembark at the large grassy area, behind Woolworths, downstream from the traffic bridge.
This event is not a race: It is a group paddle which offers the opportunity to enjoy & experience the Macleay River waters near Kempsey and be informed of issues and happenings to ensure a clean river.
What you will need
- A canoe/kayak with paddle or paddles
- buoyancy vest
- water
- and food.
This section of the Macleay River is tidal and about 100m wide and shallow in some areas. As the area is in enclosed waters, (depending on your level of canoeing expertise) the paddle will be easy but fairly demanding in distance.
Please note that canoeing can be hazardous and all participants will be required to fill in the indemnity form below (which basically says all care, but you are responsible for your own actions). As it is a group paddle, not a race, help/guidance will be available for those who may need it to ensure a safe and enjoyable day.
Paddle on the Macleay 2019 offers you an opportunity to have a great experience on a section of the Macleay River, bounded by farming, wooded slopes and urban areas. Paddling is peaceful and beautiful, so please come and enjoy it…
