May Forum: Battle to conserve UNE habitat

The next SLA Forum, on Thursday 2 May, will be on the battle to save University of New England’s (UNE) habitat, presented by Tim Collins {pictured}.

In January 2018, UNE management cut down approximately 70 of the largest old trees on campus. Many of these trees were habitat for native wildlife and were representative of the original vegetation that existed before European colonization. Very little warning was given that the trees were to be removed. UNE management claimed that the trees were at the end of their natural lives and were a danger to staff, students and visitors.

What has led to this episode of habitat tree destruction at UNE? Are there more planned tree removals to come? Are there any alternatives to tree removal? What can the broader community do?

Tim Collins, a student at UNE, was involved in the campaign to stop the destruction. Tim will present an overview of the habitat tree issue, UNE management’s responses and justifications, and the current tree management plans at UNE.

Forum Thursday 2 May 2019: 7–9pm Kent House, Faulkner Street, opposite Central Park

The forum is followed by a delicious light supper and informal conversation. Everyone is Welcome, as are small donations
