Community comes together at Black Gully Festival

Saturday, 17 Nov
10:00 am

The community will come together at the 8th Black Gully Festival – a free and inclusive event celebrating Armidale and our region.

“Black Gully Festival is truly a community day. It is organised by the community for our community,” said Dave Carr, a driving force behind the event.“Individuals, groups and organisations from across our region donate their time, expertise and services to collaborate in the creation of this fantastic event which offers something for everyone – young and older!”

The 2018 Black Gully Festival will be held between 10am and 10pm on 17 November in the parklands behind New England Regional Art Museum.

“The event has been growing, in size and impact, each year,” Mr Carr said.“It builds connections between people – individuals and also groups and organisations. The festival has been instrumental in strengthening the partnership between all the participating organisations. Many have gone on to develop joint projects as a result.

“People who come along on the day relax, spend time with family, catch up with old and new friends, and have fun while learning about some of the wonderful groups doing great things in our community.”

Each year, the Black Gully Festival brings people together to enjoy music, art, the environment and our community.

A range of organisations will be represented – each coordinating activities on the day including a craft market, food stalls, theatre, print and other art workshops, environmental displays, tree planting, a clothes swap and recycling workshops.

“Throughout the day, local bands will perform on four different stages showcasing the enormous talent we have in the region,” Mr Carr said.“The Creek Stage will showcase fabulous local acts from 10.20am. The front courtyard of NERAM will set the stage for our beautiful acoustic performers from 10.50am. ‘The Basement’ is a new stage where we will showcase some of our very talented younger crew from 2pm!”

A special highlight this year is the 30th Anniversary Celebrations of Aboriginal Cultural Centre and Keeping Place – also the site of the 4th performance stage.

Special celebrations at the Keeping Place will begin from 12.00pm with a smoking ceremony, flag raising, traditional Aboriginal dance and didgeridoo playing. There will be Aboriginal markets, an Aboriginal concert, Aboriginal Language Lab, Aboriginal workshops, Aboriginal food stalls and a children’s carnival. At 4.30pm the newly constructed second gallery will be launched, new exhibitions opened and an Aboriginal Art Award announced.

“The 8th Black Gully Festival promises to be a huge day with something for everyone!” said Mr Carr.
