- Where: The Pilliga, North West NSW, return from Sydney, Newcastle and Northern Rivers.
The Pilliga forest is the largest woodland in eastern Australia. It is a sacred place for the Gamilaraay people and a vital recharge area of the Great Artesian Basin.
The Pilliga spans over half a million acres. It’s famous for grand landscapes and delicate beauties—including a diversity of wildflowers. Ancient Gamilaraay rock art and sacred sandstone outcrops punctuate its rolling woodlands.
One of 15 biodiversity hotspots in Australia, it is a mecca for birdwatchers. Its sandstone layers and ephemeral rivers filter pristine water for the Great Artesian Basin below. It’s hot bore country, a gateway to Outback Australia and its starry sky above is beyond compare.
This trip will be a time for immersing yourself, listening and learning about the region, its people and what is at stake. It will also be a chance to connect to the movement that has held back coal seam gas for years, and find out how you can help protect the Pilliga for good.
