Local ecologist, Carmel Flint, will talk about the latest successes of the social movement to protect land and water from coal and unconventional gas across Australia, the big challenges still facing us nationally, the truth about the so-called gas crisis, and the latest research on the climate change impacts of unconventional gas.
Carmel is the Campaign Coordinator with Lock the Gate Alliance, so she is in a good position to speak about local and national issues. While we do not have ‘unconventional’ gas (shale and coal seam gas) in New England, there are rich reserves to our west that underlay both prime agricultural land and the Pilliga Forest. It is these reserves that are in dispute with the Santos Mining Company and are a focus of many Armidale residents who are concerned about Australia’s future water and food security.
SLA anticipates Carmel’s talk will attract a diverse audience and generate lively discussion. Everyone is welcome.
The forum, like all SLA forums, will be held at Kent House (Faulkner street opposite Central Park) at 7pm on Thursday, June 1st. Talk and discussion will be followed by a light supper and a chance to converse informally. Gold coin donations are appreciated to cover the venue costs.
