It’s the start of the school year, and people concerned about climate change might wonder how issues around environmental sustainability are being taught in our schools.
Sustainable Living Armidale (SLA)’s first monthly forum for 2017 will focus on what is happening in NSW schools, with guest speaker Julie Kennelly, a teacher at the Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre on Rockvale Road.
Julie has been teaching aspects of sustainability for many years in Armidale, to primary, secondary and tertiary students, and will share some insights and answer questions.
“Helping students to understand and appreciate the natural environment is always called for, and endlessly enjoyable,” says Julie, “but there’s a lot more to it than that.”
At a recent public meeting about solar energy our local member Adam Marshall stressed the importance of education for a sustainable future, and used the example that when he was at school his generation learned about recycling, and that this ‘take home message’ had played a large part in the wide acceptance of domestic recycling.
SLA hopes that this forum will bring people up to date with what the current generation of school students are taking home.
SLA has been holding monthly open forums for ten years, with a wide range of interesting topics. Everyone is welcome to attend. The Forum “What are schoolkids learning about sustainability?” is on Thursday 2nd February at 7pm at Kent House, 141 Faulkner Street, opposite Central Park. Light refreshments to follow, gold coin donation.
