February Forum: Beth Jackson previews the environmental art exhibition – Bimblebox

Thursday, 4 Feb
7:00 pm

bimblebox-blog-beth-j-photo2Beth Jackson will present a preview of Bimblebox: art – science – nature, at our first open forum of 2016.

Bimblebox is an exhibition that showcases artists interpretations of the Bimblebox Nature Refuge which is currently under threat from coal mining. Inspired by the unique ark of life found at the Bimblebox Nature Refuge, a group of artists camped on the reserve documenting, drawing and recording in order to capture the environmental, social and scientific significance of this unique landscape. Artists have also drawn inspiration from scientific research and historical texts.

According to curator Beth Jackson,

“What better way to express the character of this vulnerable and threatened landscape than through artworks which are themselves beautiful and fragile, unique and precious. This exhibition taps into a long tradition of Australian landscape art but for a very specific place and an urgent political moment. It’s an inspiring and thought-provoking show.”

Beth is a former Director and Curator of Griffith Artworks, Griffith University, with considerable experience in art collection management and policy, and arts program management including artists-in-residence, touring exhibitions, and events. Beth has specialist interest and expertise in new media, digital art and interdisciplinary arts practices. She is an experienced tertiary arts educator.

Beth is  also giving a tour of the Bimblebox exhibition at 10.30am on Saturday 6 February at NERAM so if anyone can’t make it to this forum they can come along to hear her speak.
