NVDA skills for creating change – an interactive workshop

Armidale, Tuesday 15th October – 1.30 – 5.30pm

University of New England Education Seminar Room 248

What makes ordinary people take extraordinary action?  How do we use nonviolent direct action (NVDA) as one more part of our toolkit as campaigners for change? How does inspiring civil disobedience add urgency and weight to environmental and social justice campaigns?

This interactive workshop will provide a forum for participants to:

  • Discuss how and why civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action has been part of successful social movements in Australia and worldwide over many decades
  • Understand the basic principles of NVDA
  • Learn how to emotionally and physically prepare for taking action, or support others to
  • Give an understanding of the physical roles, logistics and planning of NVDA

CounterAct provides training in civil disobedience, direct action skills and community campaigning across Australia. Project Manager and trainer Nicola Paris has over a decade of experience working with community groups and non-government organisations.  Recently she has run trainings with the Wilderness Society, No McDonald’s in Tecoma, Quit Coal, Lock the Gate, Australian Youth Climate Coalition and spent many months supporting the successful campaign to save James Price Point in the Kimberley.

RSVP: Emma Wasson, Community Organiser at the Wilderness Society
