Tour of Halls Peak and Hillgrove Area Mine Sites 25-26 May 2013
Day1 (times are approximate)
Leave Kempsey 8.00 am
Bellbrook 8.45 am
Georges Junction
Morning Tea 10.00 – 10.20 am
Raspberry Road turnoff
meet Armidale Group 11.00 am
Halls Peak Mine 11.40 am
1½km walk to mine site on well marked track, moderate gradients, some exposure at mine site.
See old mine workings and holding ponds and the barren eroded minescape contrasting with the natural magnificence of the Chandler Gorge.
12.40 Lunch
Drainage humps on road may deter low clearance vehicles from this point. We could walk 2km along road to Halls Peak with extensive views views of the Chandler River Gorge and the area of the Firefly and Faints mines on Asens Creek. (An extremely steep and rough stony track can be seen descending to the mine sites. A full day walk suitable only for the very fit and not recommended for this tour.)
The final 200 m to the top of Halls Peak is trackless and steep, it involves some rock scrambling and areas off exposure; children would need to be well supervised.
3.00 pm Drive to Green Gully Campground near Wollomombi Falls
There is another campground at Long Point near Hillgrove. Both areas are in Oxley Wild Rivers N.P. and offer well marked walking tracks with spectacular gorge views.
Day2
Visit the the historic mining town of Hillgrove, the mine site headquarters (no entry) and the Hillgrove Museum. Then a short drive to Metz Gorge from where the Hillgrove Mine workings in Bakers Creek Gorge can be viewed.
Return to Kempsey via Bellbrook or Dorrigo/Bellingen.
