Check out all the great Woodland Week activities occuring from 20th – 28th September 2012!

Children of Treefest – Friday 21st September [URALLA]

Join land managers, revegetators and landcarers to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Treefest. See tree plantings from the original event, hear great speakers, revisit the Amazing Maze and learn about the great Landcare movement on the Tablelands that rose in response to New England Dieback. Join in the Landcare Challenge or help to plant the Tree Frog shape.

Armidale Tree Group Open Day – Saturday 22nd September [ARMIDALE]

For 30 years the Armidale Tree Group has been sustaining New England with native plants. Come and learn from the experts about local native plants and how to propagate and grow them. Tour the Mike O’Keeffe Woodland in the centre of town and join in a tree planting activity on site. Look at the educational displays in the Woodland Centre and buy some native plants for your garden.

Bugs in the Bush – Saturday 22nd September [ARMIDALE]

Organised by Armidale Tree Group

Join Steve Tremont and Armidale Tree Group’s bushcare volunteers looking for invertebrate animals living down in the grass, up trees, on flowers, under the leaf litter or in the soil of a woodland ecosystem. Learn what meat ants do during the day and see how many other types of ants we can find along with wood roaches, beetles, flies, collembola, worms, caterpillars, bugs and more. We will keep a few then use microscopes to study their amazing details and see if we can identify them.

Treecycle – Sunday 23rd September [ARMIDALE]

Southern New England Landare and Armidale Urban Rivercare Group.

Join Nic Cobcroft from SNEL and AURG members to explore the Dumaresq Creekland Plantings by bicycle. See the trees planted by HiCUB and community volunteers over the last few years. The 13 “showcase” plantings feature unique New England species. Ride at an easy pace from UNE to Taylor St along bike paths and finish with a community tree planting and afternoon tea.

Sugar Gliders in the Spotlight – Monday 24th September [ARMIDALE]

Supported by Armidale Dumaresq Council, Thalgarrah and OEH

Join Phil Spark at Thalgarrah Environmental Education Centre on the Rockvale Rd for a night of spotlighting in the woodlands. There is a good chance we will see Sugar Gliders, Bats, Possums and other nocturnal woodland dwellers. We might even see a platypus in the river. Tom Barrett, from the Office of Environment and Heritage, will start the night by explaining how wildlife moves through a well-connected landscape, followed by a barbecue before we head out into the night.

Breakfast with the birds – Wednesday 26th September [GUYRA]

Organised by Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA

Join Phil Spark at the South Guyra TSR to look at the animals that live in the Guyra Woodlands. There will be a BBQ breakfast to start off, then a walk through the woodland spotting birds and reptiles. You will see reptiles and bats up close, hear birds and see the wildflowers. You’ll be surprised at what lives in our woodlands! Afterwards you can continue on the ‘Plants of the Plateau’ bus tour.

Plants on the Plateau – Wednesday 26th September [GUYRA]

Organised by Border Rivers-Gwydir CMA

Join David Carr and CMA staff on a bus tour the Guyra Plateau looking at the unique high country vegetation communities. Learn how to identify the common plants of the district and their uses. We will see Endangered Ecological Communities, threatened species and some special places. This tour will be of great value if you own or manage land and want to know what grows there. Lunch and morning tea provided.

If you go into the woods today… Thursday 27th September [WALCHA]

Supported by Walcha Council

You’ll be in for a big surprise when you find out what lives in the woodlands around Walcha town. Not teddy bears, but gliders, koalas, possums, reptiles and bats. Experience Walcha’s real night life – come spotlighting with Phil Spark. Start with an evening barbecue then walk along tracks on the south west corner of town.

Planting trees for koalas, Friday 28th September [URALLA]

Organised by Uralla Shire Council

Steve Field from Fields Environmental Services and Stephanie McCaffrey from Uralla Shire Council will help you plant trees on the creek as a food source for koalas in the area. Recent erosion control works have left the creek banks bare, so local native shrubs will be planted too. Afterwards, join us for an evening barbecue. After 1 or 2 years, the trees we plant will be used as a source of food for local sick and injured koalas in care.
