GASLAND is coming to the Belgrave Cinema

Thursday, 24 Feb
7:00 pm

There will be only one screening, 7pm Thursday February 24th at the Belgrave Twin Cinema.

GASLAND is an award-winning documentary about the unbridled extraction of natural gas in the USA.

When Josh Fox, a theatre director and part-time banjo player, is approached by a natural gas company offering him $100,000 for permission to explore on his land, he decides to pick up his camera and ask questions.  What results is part travelogue, part expose, part mystery, part showdown, as Fox uncovers the effects of the Halliburton-led drilling technology known as ‘fracking’.

Documents obtained by the Sydney Morning Herald (18.10.10) show thatAustralian mining companies are using highly toxic chemicals to extract coal seam gas during the controversial process known as ‘fracking’.

“Fracking, or hydraulic fracturing, involves injecting a mixture of water, sand and chemicals at high pressure underground in order to fracture rock formations and release coal seam gas.

“The proposed use of fracking near watercourses, including a plan to deploy fracking next to Warragamba Dam, has fed concerns that drinking water could be contaminated if gas extraction goes ahead.”
