SUMMARY:Rising Tide Action Camp!
DESCRIPTION:ACTION CAMP is LIVE | August 15-17 \nDear friends and comrades\, \nYou are cordially invited to Rising Tide Sydney’s Action Camp\, a melting pot of activist skill- and relationship-building held together with Rising Tide’s key strategic drive: do things that build power and momentum. \nThe program will include trainings from the Foundations curriculum\, as well as other key skill-based workshops in NVDA\, spokes-council decision-making\, community care\, and more core Rising Tide content. \nIn exciting news\, we’re also bringing skilled facilitators and speakers from around allied movements in Sydney to run sessions. So far\, these include (not limited to): \n\nLegal observers training and the Resisting Repression workshop from Legal Observers NSW\,\nDoor-knocking and deep canvassing training from the Greens and Inner West for Palestine\,\nActivist cooking and mutual aid with Food not Bombs (also assisting our catering!)\,\n\nWe also have access to a podcast studio that holds a live audience\, so that forums and presentations from experienced activists can be recorded for distribution\, multiplying and preserving the value of the wisdom that can be shared. Sessions we’re looking towards include (not limited to): \n\nPractical intersectional solidarity\,\nUnion organising skills and context\,\nThe economics of fossil fuel exports.\n\nWe’re making Action Camp a vibe with crafty spaces and relationship-building activities like: \n\nzine-making\, banner-painting\, group singing workshops (and more)\,\na semi-facilitated “People’s Supper” on Friday night\,\na concert on Saturday night (theme: Birds of a Feather)\n\nWe’re also planning a powerful action for the Monday 18th of August\, which will be prepped over the weekend. \n\nIf you’re not able to go RED during this year’s blockade\, but are still interested in direct action\, consider whether participating in Sydney’s action may be for you.\n\nIf you are not Sydney-based\, there are free camping options and billets available and we would love to host you! \n\nAction Camp is open to everyone\, and we are particularly encouraging folks to attend who are based anywhere from Canberra in the south\, to the Blue Mountains in the west\, to Newcastle in the north\nThis is an amazing opportunity to build connections between some of the largest and some of the newest Hubs in the population centres of NSW and the ACT\nFolks from further afield are also warmly encouraged to attend\n\nhttps://www.risingtide.org.au/action-camp \nWe’ve been nearly gifted Addison Road community centre for a full weekend (a cornerstone of nearly any grassroots political organising in Sydney)\, since the folks that run the joint see Rising Tide’s potential to bring people together as something they want to invest in.

SUMMARY:Film: 'No Other Land' showing at Belgrave Cinema
DESCRIPTION:New England Greens are pleased to bring the 2025 Academy Award documentary No Other Land showing at the Belgrave Cinema at 6.30pm on Wednesday 30 July.  It is a fundraiser to send money to Médecins sans Frontières for their noble medical work in Palestine.  As it is a fundraiser\, tickets must be bought by cash either beforehand from Gaynor {mobile prefix oh for}08923757 or in the cinema foyer.  They cannot be bought through the cinema. \nNo Other Land is a 2024 documentary film directed by Basel Adra\, Hamdan Ballal\, Yuval Abraham\, and Rachel Szor\, in their directorial debut. A Palestinian-Israeli collective of activists\, the four conceived and produced the film in what they describe as an act of resistance on the path to justice in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict. The film was recorded between 2019 and 2023 and shows the destruction of a Palestinian community in the occupied West Bank\, which had been resisting forced displacement after an Israeli “firing zone” was declared on their land.

SUMMARY:Renewable Energy Battery Storage for the Home
DESCRIPTION:Date: Thursday 10 July 2025Time: 5:15 pm to 7:00 pm (refreshments from 5:00 pm)Location: NOVA\, 122 Faulkner St\, ArmidaleRegister for in-person or online attendance: Register here \nThis free community event in Armidale comes just days after the launch of the federal government’s $2.3 billion Cheaper Home Batteries Program\, which will provide around 30 percent upfront discounts on battery installations for eligible households and businesses. The session will help locals unpack what battery storage means for homes\, electric vehicles\, and the wider community. \nWhether you are a renter\, homeowner\, installer\, or simply curious about the future of energy\, this event will offer clear and practical insights. It will cover the benefits and challenges of battery storage and explain how systems like Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) work. You will also hear how storage links with community-scale projects and electricity networks. \nExpert speakers include: \n\n\nGeoff Bragg (Smart Energy Council): How home batteries work and what the new federal incentive means \n\n\nBridie Schmidt (NRMA): How EVs can store and supply energy with technologies like V2G\, V2H and V2L \n\n\nSally Hunter (Geni.Energy): How communities can co-own and benefit from energy storage \n\n\nAlistair Fletcher (Essential Energy): How batteries integrate with the broader grid\, including pole-top and neighbourhood-scale options \n\n\n\n“This event is all about empowering locals to take control of their energy future\,” said Trevor Brown\, Convenor of Electrify Armidale. “We want to make it easier for people to understand their storage options\, reduce bills\, and participate in the energy transition.” \n\n\n“Battery storage is often described as the missing piece in the clean energy puzzle\,” added Heidi McElnea\, Regional Partnerships Coordinator at Community Power Agency. “But it can be complex. This event brings together leading experts to explain how national policy connects to local opportunities.” \n\nThis event is part of a broader program of practical\, hands-on learning across the New England region. Covering solar\, electrification\, energy upgrades\, electric vehicles\, and large-scale renewables\, the series connects communities with expert advice\, financial incentives\, and trusted local suppliers. \nSupported by:This event is made possible through funding from the Paul Ramsay Foundation via the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal’s Community Led Climate Solutions grant program.

DESCRIPTION:This weaving workshop uses the dolichandra inguis catsclaw feral weed to make a woven casket. The weekend is facilitated by Zimmi Forest and Emma who will guide us through weaving and mutual exploration into our mortality. \nA deeply immersive exploration of death\, dying and grief \nExplore mortality loss and grief through sensory process of weaving. Working collectively we make a life size woven coffin and lid. This tactile experience invites you to drop into your hands. Ancestral weaving merges with reflections on lifestyles and liminal spaces. Coffin making invites you to consider your relationship within nature and how we hold and are held in death and allows us to explore the inevitably of death which releases deep gratitude for this precious life. \nThe weaving material is cats claw which is an invasive creeper impacting native vegetation in the subtropical rainforest. The removal of the vine from the forest protects and enhances native vegetation. \nThe weekend will be facilitated by fibre artist Zimmi Forest (Weaving Nature). Zimmi has been teaching and creating for the last 42 years and has exhibited both locally and internationally. \nEmma Beattie (Before and after Life) is a death doula and works with Paperbark funerals. Her personal experience around death and dying gives her a poetic and creative lens to caring and griefwork. \nSponsorship of this workshop has been generously supported by Sustainable Living Armidale and Uralla Arts to keep cost as low as possible for participants to attend. \nCost of workshop is $220 for the weekend with 24 places available. \nLook forward to sharing this journey \nMaxine \nSustainable Deathcare New England

SUMMARY:Free talk: David Holmgren 'Weeds or Wild Nature'
DESCRIPTION:David is back in Armidale to start a discussion on the night of the Strawberry Moon titled ‘weeds or wild nature’. His last presentation ‘Aussie Street’ packed the Armidale Town Hall 6 years ago promoting his popular book RetroSuburbia: The Downshifter’s Guide to a Resilient Future. David Holmgren is a bit of a legend\, he is the co-originator of the permaculture concept\, following publication of Permaculture One\, co-authored with Bill Mollison in 1978. David is a pioneering voice in sustainable design and ecological stewardship. With decades of experience and insight\, his work has inspired a global movement towards regenerative living. \n‘Weeds or wild nature’ presentation and discussion will start with the premise that  land design and management informed by permaculture principles tends to treat naturalised newcomer plants as assets that stabilise water and soil\, build biomass\, fix nutrients\, ameliorate microclimate and provide habitat\, fodder\, fuel and food. While naturalised species may be given a lower value in permaculture design than species regarded as indigenous to the site and region\, labelling naturalised species as ‘invasive’ or ‘environmental weeds’ is typically rejected as anti-ecological thinking. \nThe background and basis for this positive view of naturalised plants is not well understood\, and has led to persistent criticism of permaculture by those promoting the orthodox view of ‘weeds’ as invasives. This has itself influenced the practices and teaching of many permaculturists to moderate or compromise the permaculture approach to naturalised species. Consequently the ‘weeds or wild nature’ controversy is alive and well within the permaculture movement. \nIn this presentation\, co-originator of the permaculture concept\, David Holmgren will provide his unique perspective on the evolution of this discourse and its connection to the wider debate on this issue in conservation and land management networks. David’s story is partly a historical and personal one as well as a review of the scientific literature on the subject. \nHolmgren offers profound guidance for creating resilient ecosystems and communities. Holmgren’s expertise and passion for sustainable living promise to ignite transformative dialogue and empower individuals to enact positive change.\nKey publications include Permaculture: Principles and Pathways Beyond Sustainability (2002) and Future Scenarios: How Communities Can Adapt To Peak Oil and Climate Change (2009) and RetroSuburbia: The Downshifter’s Guide to a Resilient Future (2018).\n\nIt will be a great night with a visonary thinker and some passionate discussion followed by a social supper. Free talk\, no need to RSVP.
