Lismore leads the nation in uptake of solar energy

LISMORE is leading the nation in solar power with a higher percentage of households in the 2480 postcode using rooftop solar and/or hot water systems than anywhere else in Australia.

A new report by the REC (Renewable Energy Certificate) Agents Association also finds the NSW North Coast is leading the state. Eight of the top 10 communities for solar installations in NSW are north of Newcastle.

The high rate of solar uptake comes despite below average incomes across the NSW top 10. In fact, REC found that lower income households and those in regional communities are more likely to install solar power. Their analysis found that 40% of solar installations are in rural and regional areas.

Starfish is working with Lismore City Council to develop Australia’s first community-owned solar farm as part of the Farming the Sun collaboration. The project could form a significant part of Lismore City’s objective to go 100% renewable for its own energy needs.
