Thursday Forum: Film ‘Land Awakening’

Thursday, 6 Mar
7:00 pmto9:00 pm

yellwprunescuThe subject of the next Thursday Forum to be held by Sustainable Living Armidale on March 6th explores our relationship to land: seeds, soil, planting, cooking, and eating. SLA will screen Land Awakening, a recent feature-length documentary made by Mexican-Canadian Director Raul Alvarez.

Inspired by his son’s volunteering at organic farms in Spain, Alvarez embarked on his own Mediterranean odyssey to learn about sustainable agriculture, and discovered new intriguing approaches to food production.

Through his encounters with unique characters, concepts like ‘agriculture’, ‘tilling the soil’, ‘supermarkets’ and even the term ‘weeds’ are questioned, making his journey engaging and fascinating. It is an inspiring film on the goodness of healthy food and the generosity of the Land.

SLA member Ray South recommended the film for an Armidale screening, “It’s positive and inspiring, and will strike a chord with the many Armidale people who are engaged with local food production and sustainability,” he said. “It shows that change is not only necessary, but clearly possible, and it follows on nicely from the Home Grown Garden Tour that SLA has organised on the weekend of 1st-2nd March.”

Some of the most popular SLA Forums in recent years have been on the topic of food, local and global, and have inspired many people to grow and share, either at home or at SLA’s Community Garden, or at SLA’s shared meals.

SLA’s Open Forum, with the screening of “Land Awakening”, will be held on Thursday 6th March at 7pm at Kent House, 141 Faulkner Street, opposite Central Park. Everyone is welcome, light refreshments to follow. Gold coin donation appreciated.
